Ohio Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Studies

The Ohio Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Studies is approved by the Trustees of Ohio University and resides in College of Arts and Sciences. The mission of the center is to advance the knowledge of ecology and evolutionary biology (EEB) through an interdisciplinary learning and research community, integrating cutting-edge science and technology with undergraduate and graduate education.

The Center's core philosophy is that the frontiers of EEB advance by integrating diverse conceptual and methodological approaches from different academic disciplines and separate units within the University.  This interdisciplinary approach stimulates new areas of research and collaboration and increases interchange among diverse faculty and students.  Accordingly, the best preparation we can provide our students is formal engagement in research in modern integrative biology.

OCEES Programs: We offer graduate and undergraduate programs to support and increase research experience for graduate students and superlative undergraduates.

  • OCEES Graduate Research Fellows.  The goal of the OCEES fellowship program is to increase research support for graduate students in ecology and evolutionary biology at Ohio University. The program provides relief from teaching for highly competitive graduate students who are enrolled in masters or doctoral programs in OCEES departments. The fellowship serves to facilitate the student’s research productivity by enabling them to devote full time to complete field or laboratory research or work on writing theses/dissertations and/or publications.
  •
  • UGRIP- the UnderGraduate Research Immersion Program (UGRIP) is a new initiative to increase undergraduate involvement in research.  The extensive learning community of OCEES faculty, post-docs, and graduate students are used to increase the formal engagement of undergraduates in inquiry-based learning and research.  UGRIP is open on a competitive basis to EEB majors in the participating departments beginning in their freshman year.   UGRIP engages students in formal research courses and interactions with visiting scientists each year and many students choose to pursue undertake additional directed research experiences or formally enter Senior Honors Thesis Programs offered in our departments.
  • OCEES Science Seminars.  This initiative will provide a new campus wide science seminar series.  Talks will be given by on campus researchers and OCEES will bring in leading researchers as keynote speakers in the series and to interact with OCEES community and our graduate and UGRIP students.

The Center's current director is Professor Stephen Reilly, Department of Biological Sciences.
